World Organisation for the Family and Child Welfare (WOFCW) – SUDAN

Posted in Partner of The Week on February 21, 2019

The World Organisation for the Family and Child Welfare (WOFCW) was established in 2014 by a group of young and energetic people who were highly motivated and committed to contributing their time, skills and energies for development and empowerment of socially disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in Sudan.

WOFCW mostly focuses on helping orphans and vulnerable children by teaching them life skills and other tools needed to start and develop their own small enterprises in order to generate income and achieve self-sufficiency. Additionally, it also addresses issues related to poverty, food distribution, health services and gender inequality.

WOFCW has collaborated with Sudanese Coalition for Education for All (SCEFA) and Plan International Sudan to implement the Aflatoun programmes in three states. Currently, there is ongoing work to expand and implement the Aflatoun programmes in all states and to create Aflatoun clubs in all schools. The goal behind this project is to decrease absenteeism of children between the ages of 6 and 14 and to train more teachers on the importance of social and financial education for children.

Saida’s Story

The establishment of Aflatoun Clubs has successfully increased the number of children interested in financial projects. One of these success stories is Saida, who had previously left school to work in the fields.

Saida was invited to the Aflatoun club by one of her friends and eventually became a member, although she was not formally enrolled in the school. Through engaging with the club’s activities and participants, Saida decided to leave her work and go back to school. She has also encouraged other children to do the same and find more productive and innovative ways of generating income without having to sacrifice their education and future.
