We have to invest in teachers and education that will improve the self-reliance of children and young people.

World Teachers’ Day is not just an occasion to celebrate teachers, but also to take a closer look at education. Good education is essential to create a sustainable future, something that can be advanced by an active learning method whereby students learn to think critically and teachers play a supporting role.

The last 10 years we have come a long way and worldwide more children go to school than ever before, but the tragedy is that many quit early. These children who drop out of school miss the social and financial skills they need to get along and get ahead in life.

In order to avoid that many young people will stay jobless at home, which is happening throughout the world, we have to invest in teachers and education that will improve the self-reliance of children and young people.

Classes containing social and financial themes give students the opportunity to strengthen their position in society and, more specifically, the job market. They learn about themselves, their rights and responsibilities, how to save money and how to start an enterprise. In other words, they learn to be prepared for the future. Aflatoun International and its partners have trained more than 70,000 teachers worldwide to offer students good social and financial education that offers exactly this.

“This unique mix of social and financial education while being student centred, gives young people the chance to give their life a positive twist and have a positive influence on their society. It makes them instead of dependent, independent”, said Aflatoun International’s CEO Roeland Monasch.

In many countries the division between rich and poor is growing and 47% of the people living under the poverty line are children. Often, their parents haven’t had the chance to improve their position in society. With Social and Financial Education we can prevent that poverty and inequality will be passed on from one generation to the next.

Research shows that Aflatoun’s educational programmes have a positive impact on the self-confidence and self–reliance of children to set and reach their goals in life. The innovative method helps them prepare for a complex and turbulent world.
