Established in 1991, Humana Child Aid Society Sabah is a non-profit social NGO providing education for thousands of children, who live on plantations and other remote areas far from schools in the Malaysian state Sabah on Borneo.
Humana Child Aid Society Sabah started Aflatoun in 2011 in Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia. Teachers use child-centered tools and methodologies like songs, visual aids, and group exercises to promote participatory learning. Students are saving modest amounts of money in personal recycled savings boxes, and have shared about increased awareness of saving resources. Most of the students in Humana schools, which are non-formal and state-recognized, are from stateless and marginalized sectors (children of plantation workers). Some of the teachers themselves represent marginalized groups (migrant workers in vulnerable circumstances).
