Partner of the Week: ChildFund Honduras

Posted in Partner of The Week on August 17, 2017

ChildFund protects children’s well-being by strengthening relationships between children, parents, teachers and their wider community. This improves children’s lives, enabling them to dream, achieve their potential and contribute to their communities. ChildFund has been working with children in Honduras since 1982.

ChildFund was the first organisation to take on the challenge of implementing the Aflatoun programme in Honduras. From the start, they promoted the Aflatoun methodology and worked together with several institutions. They also encouraged the formation of the Aflatoun Network in Honduras, consisting of various organisations of civil society and the private sector.

In 2009, they started implementing the Aflatoun programme as a pilot. The aim was to complement schools with a curriculum that strengthened the governments’ programme and established saving habits in boys and girls through social and financial education.

The Aflatot and Aflatoun programme are currently implemented by ChildFund in 111 schools. An outstanding achievement of the programme in Honduras is the alliance with the foundation of one of the largest financial groups in the country, Grupo Financiero Ficohsa. In conjunction with the Ministry of Education of Honduras, ChildFund and Foundation Ficohsa have integrated social and financial education into the curricular content of pre-basic education (early childhood), reaching more than 30,000 pre-school children.

In 2014, ChildFund conducted an evaluation of Aflatoun’s social and financial programmes. The results show positive changes in the socioemotional outcomes of boys and girls. After participating in the Aflatot programme, children showed an increase in their decision-making capacity, their ability to express their emotions and the ability to promote and maintain mutual positive relationships.

Aflatoun’s social and financial programme is helping to educate a more conscious and empowered generation in Honduras that understands and applies the concepts of value and reward for effort in their lives.
