Partner of the Week: Good Neighbors Philippines (GNIP)

Good Neighbors Philippines (GNIP) is an international, child-focused, humanitarian, and development NGO. For 12 years, they have been planning, implementing, and raising funds for the provision of services in child education, community development, health, sanitation, income generation and disaster relief projects.  

Good Neighbors Philippines envisions a country where people care and share with love for the welfare of every Filipino child, which is why they have worked to promote the well-being of marginalised Filipino children through integrated and child-centred community development programmes that create long term positive change. 

They are committed to foster social causes from a multi-perspective approach in order to improve quality of education, child protection, and health and sanitation; while working to alleviate poverty as well as the fall out disaster and climate change. 

By applying a Child-Centred Community Development (CCCD) approaches, GNIP aims to ensure that children’s best interests are at the heart of all programmes/projects, and address the root causes of challenges faced by children and the youth in the communities. Various programmes such as education, health, income generation, disaster risk reduction and water, sanitation and hygiene, have been made available by Good Neighbors Philippines in order to equip people with the necessary skills to thrive in their respective sectors. 

Our partnership 

Aflatoun offers a variety of lessons and strategies to teach children about social and financial education. GNIP sees the opportunity to deliver adequate learning and specific life skills to help children prepare themselves in the future — A Good Neighbors Philippines staff member

Good Neighbors Philippines has been an Aflatoun partner since 2018, using the Aflatoun social and financial curricula for 6-14 year old children. They have seen growth within their community as a result of social and financial education, due to the strong partnership and new or innovative strategies that it brings, strengthening the community as a result of active networks.  

The aspect of the curriculum that excites us is the stronger partnership we can build with the teachers and schools in delivering quality education through the Aflatoun programme. We are also looking forward to children learning, innovating, and practicing the curriculum material. The Benefits of Social Skills Programmes

Late 2019 up until early 2020, Good Neighbors Philippines conducted training of trainers on financial education through the Aflatoun programme in 4 of its Community Development Projects (CDP). Due to the pandemic, GNIP had to limit its implementation on teacher/facilitators training and building partnership for the roll out of the programme and Aflatoun curriculum to schools and community.  

Nevertheless, they were able to adapt to changing circumstances and trained 87 teachers, and 144 children across communities in San Isidro in Rodriguez, Rizal; Tingoy in Batangas; Guiuan in Eastern Samar; Laak in Davao De Oro, and Prieto Diaz in Sorsogon. The Community Development Projects will also roll out Alfatoun through the Child Rights Clubs in their respective schools to emphasise children’s personal understanding, their rights and responsibilities, saving and spending, planning and budgeting; and child social and financial enterprise.  

GNIP aims to build strong partnerships with the teachers and schools to provide holistic learning from school and in their community. One of their initiatives in Social and Financial Enterprise is that they were able to start to introduce this concept to their Child Rights Club (in-school and community groups) and be able to collaborate with the volunteer teachers. 

Growing evidence suggests that building soft skills such as problem solving, communication, teamwork and managing money can help young people transition into work and to become active and responsible citizens within their households, communities and countries. However, whether in school or in community, children and youth often lack access to opportunities to build these skills, which is what makes partnerships like these so important. Through our cooperation we can continue to bring access to quality education to those who need it most.
