Posted in Partner of The Week on November 1, 2018

Established in 1936, Children International (CI) is a US-based NGO that helps impoverished children overcome the effects of poverty, support their education, and prepare youth to contribute to society. SAHAY is an affiliate of Children International in India, established in 1989 and currently working in 9 districts of West Bengal and 11 city regions of Kolkata. The organisation began its partnership with Aflatoun International in 2011 when they implemented our programmes in 3 countries: Ecuador, India and the Philippines.

Through the Aflatoun non-formal education programme, they have reached 1,600 children, 720 children in the age group 9-11 years. As part of the Aflatoun methodology, they have formed Aflatoun clubs that focus on the importance of saving money.

The Aflateen programme has reached more than 700 youths in the age group of 17 to 19. Apart from regular training sessions, visits to Self Help Groups, Cottage Industries, and Banks have been planned for them improving their financial skills and their opportunities for the future.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the Aflatoun programme at Children International - SAHAY because I am learning how to save. I used the money I saved to buy medicines for my sick mother and now she is in good health. Yes! I am so happy … I will save more.” — Harshita, a member of the Aflateen club.

Today, 28 Aflatoun clubs and 42 Aflateen clubs are actively conducting regular activities following the non-formal curriculum. As part of an activity, they celebrated Global Money Week, by going to banks and financial institutions, encouraging participants as young as 9 year-olds to open bank accounts.

Additionally, they have been practicing how to save non-monetary resources and have been successful in motivating their parents and their community to join them.
