Partner of the Week: Children International-Dominican Republic

Posted in Partner of The Week on September 13, 2018

Children International-Dominican Republic has been working in partnership with Aflatoun International for 6 years. In 2012, it was launched only in four community centers of Children International, but now it is implemented in 8 community centers with a reach of 5,000 beneficiaries in 4 provinces of the country.

This program is developed around the strategic objective “Empoderado” that seeks to train participants in life skills and social responsibility in order to become leaders and agents of change in their communities.

Through our ‘Aflatoun’ and ‘Aflateen’ curriculums, Children International-Dominican Republic has already coached more than 200 young leaders as co-facilitators, and the organisation aims to reach more than 3,000 participants, 150 teachers and trainers and 100 volunteers.

Marjorie Zoe Ramirez, a 10-year-old participant, is a great example of this programs’ accomplishments. She became an agent of change by reducing the litter problem in her community.

Marjorie began by collecting things people threw away and then using it as material to create functional goods like plastic trashcans. By re-using other peoples’ trash, the litter problem is decreasing, and the plastic trashcans she built keep the streets of her community clean.

Also, by creating alliances with important financial entities in the country, Children International-Dominican Republic has helped participants to become regular savers by helping them open formal savings accounts or through more informal forms such as bamboo tin cans made the participants themselves.

Some participants in the programme have expressed their excitement about these formal savings practices:

“At 13, I already have my own bank account." — said Ronny Hernández, a participant in the programme.

Additionally, it is the only non-governmental institution that participates in the Global Economic and Financial Week organised by the Central Bank of the Republic, and Aflatoun has supported the development of this activity in the country from the beginning.
