Aflatoun International ranks number 29 in the world’s top 500 NGOs

Posted in News on July 25, 2016

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (20 June, 2016) – Aflatoun International, working to improve the lives of children and young people, has made it to number 29 in the fourth edition of NGO Advisor’s Top 500 NGOs, listing the world’s top charitable organisations.

Turning dependence into independence

For the second year in a row, Aflatoun International ranked 29th, offering social and financial education to children and young people worldwide through its innovative social franchise model. NGO partners using Aflatoun curricula also scored high in the Top 500 NGOs list, including key partner BRAC returning to the number one spot.

Aflatoun International CEO Roeland Monasch welcomed the news:

“This reflects the efforts of our dedicated team and committed partners and shows the increasing support for social and financial education. We are now getting closer to providing all children and young people with the tools to build a better future.” — Roeland Monasch

In many countries children and young people do not have the knowledge and skills to actively participate and contribute to their societies, often characterised by weak education systems, poor social services and limited employment opportunities. Aflatoun International’s Social and Financial Education allows children and young people to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and inequality, turning dependence into independence. By becoming socially and economically empowered they are inspired to discover their talents and stand up for their rights. With the support of a strong network of 190 NGOs and 28 governments, Aflatoun International reaches four million children and young people in 120 countries.

“Our method enables children and young people not only to survive, but to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world,” Monasch said. “Our aim is to reach 20 million by 2020, making sure that the next generation gets along and gets ahead in life.”

Grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and building on its strong network, Aflatoun International has an important role to play in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals. Through its transformative programmes Aflatoun International directly contributes to four of these goals: No Poverty; Quality Education; Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequalities.
