Aflatoun Talk September 2009 (Volume 3, #09)
England programme goes live
Congratulations to Aflatoun's partner in England , Hampshire Children's Services, who are piloting their Aflatoun programme in 6 schools in Hampshire. Hampshire Children's Services are jointly hosting an Aflatoun stakeholder meeting at the invitation of Baroness Valerie Howarth at the House of Lords on the 13th October 2009. At this meeting they will be presenting their work on Aflatoun and helping to stimulate Aflatoun implementation across the rest of the UK.
Namibian Schools hold fun-filled Aflatoun Day
This summer, 500 children from 13 schools in Namibia came together to enjoy an ‘Aflatoun Day' Event, coordinated by Aflatoun's Partner Junior Achievement. Children aged 7 -14 played games, set up stalls selling food, salads and cakes, and enjoyed face-painting, among many other activities. Children who participated in this day had the chance to meet children from neighbouring schools, raise money and celebrate being an Aflatoun. The profits were distributed among all the participating schools, with the children deciding to save their money. Members of the community, including parents and teachers, were very supportive of this event and expressed their desire to hold this type of event more regularly.
Training in Mali
From 7 - 9 September, the secretariat conducted an Aflatoun training in Bamako, Mali, in collaboration with Aflatoun's Malian partner GAP/CAMIDE and with the support of the Philippson foundation. Among the 25 participants were partners, ministry education officials, inspectors, school principals and teachers from Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Rwanda. The aim of this training is to facilitate the upcoming implementation of the Aflatoun programme as the schools prepare for their new school year. This training is part of the Aflatoun goal to reach more and more children in the francophone west-African region.
Aflatoun attends US Federal Reserve Conference
This month Aflatoun attended the conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, entitled ‘Financial Literacy, Financial Education and the Federal Reserve'. Aflatoun was the sole international organisation to be represented at the conference. Jeroo Billimoria, Aflatoun's founder and Executive Director, shared the experiences, achievements and strategy of Aflatoun at the global level.
Aflatoun in the spotlight
Aflatoun received media coverage in Latin America following its attendance at the First Conference on Economic and Financial Education in Latin America and the Caribbean in Bogota, Columbia launched by CEMLA, the regional central bank association, together with the Central Bank of Colombia and the Council for Economic Education.
El Tiempo and portafolio.com.co published articles on the importance of child savings, highlighting the work of Aflatoun. Colorincolorradio, a radio programme for children, also interviewed Gabriela Salinas Lanao from the Secretariat to exchange stories of children saving across the world in a fun and child-friendly way.
