Aflatoun Talk October 2009 (Volume 3, #10)
Aflatoun Goes Live In Schools in China
Aflatoun classes have begun in the Yangzhou, Jiangsu province in China. Aflatoun's Partner in China, Shanghai Better Education Development Centre, has trained the 16 teachers who will lead the Aflatoun class to more than 500 students over the year. Early next month, 200 more primary students will attend the Aflatoun class in two community learning centers set up for migrant children in a suburban district of Beijing. Many thanks to the G-Star foundation whose funding support made this possible.

Aflatoun Student Sets up Typhoon Aid Campaign
Following the destructive typhoons that brought floods to Metro Manila and neighbouring provinces in the Philippines, twelve year old Darren Joy de Jesus, an Aflatoun student, decided to lead a small fund-raising campaign in her school entitled "Piso para sa Nasalanta ng Bagyo" (Piso for those Devastated by the Typhoon). Darren and her friends made donation boxes and placed them around the school. The money collected in the boxes was taken to the local cooperative and church, who will work together to take the donations to the nearby towns that were affected by the typhoons.

Training Across the Network
Asia -The Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU), ACCU invited Aflatoun to facilitate the Youth Workshop in their Annual Asian Credit Union Forum in Bangkok, Thailand. ACCU wishes to complement their existing savings products to children and youth with Child Social and Financial Education. Eighteen delegates representing credit unions from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka & Thailand participated in the 3 day training to become Aflatoun trainers. Lasalette Gumban from NATCCO co-facilitated the event.
Africa - In a show of regional collaboration, one of the Aflatoun trainers from Kenya, Wallace Amayo, conducted training for teachers and trainers in Gambia. This will aid Child Fund-Gambia, Aflatoun's local partner, to implement the Aflatoun programme in the near future.
Having attended the regional training earlier last month, trainers from Burkina Faso are now training 30 local teachers from 10 schools, as well as other local trainers. This will prepare the schools in the country to implement the Aflatoun programme in the following months.
Europe- As we announced in last month's newsletter, Aflatoun Secretariat staff took part in a meeting at the House of Lords in the UK, chaired by Baroness Valerie Howarth, and in collaboration with Aflatoun's partner in the UK, Hampshire Children's service. An Advisory Committee was set up that will help spread Child Social and Financial Education across the UK.
Also in Europe, at a meeting held at the Dutch Central Bank, Aflatoun's partner in the Netherlands, Plan Netherland, officially launched the contextualized Dutch materials. The Director of the Dutch Central Bank, Ms Joanne Kellerman, expressed her support for the Aflatoun initiatives and advocated for financial education as an important topic in Dutch curricula.

Update from the Secretariat
Keystone Accountability is doing a survey of many of our stakeholders and partners to determine how we are working as a network. We encourage those who have received this survey to fill it in as it will help in Aflatoun's development and with our future planning.
Also, the Aflatoun Secretariat is recruiting! Vacancies for Head of Operations, Head of Advocacy and Office Manager can be found on Aflatoun's website. If you would like to apply, or know anyone who would like to apply, please send a CV and covering letter to info@aflatoun.org

The UNCRC - It's a Child's Right
The Aflatoun Talk section on children's rights reminds us all of one "Article" or Right quoted in child-friendly language from the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). October's article is Article 32: "You have the right to protection from work that harms you, and is bad for your health and education. If you work, you have the right to be safe and paid fairly".
