Aflatoun Talk January 2010 (volume 4, #1)

Your Monthly Aflatoun Talk has arrived!

Dear Friends,

January greetings from Aflatoun!

Aflatoun Talk wishes all its readers a wonderful new year full of joy and success. This month we are taking a look back at Aflatoun's achievements over 2009, including the programme's outreach to over 540,000 children in 31 countries across the globe.

Major highlights from 2009 include:

Training for Regional Master Trainers: these trainings were conducted in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America in keeping with Aflatoun's commitment to devolve training capacity into the network.

Creation of Aflakit: This series of manuals and supplementary materials guides partner organisations through all the steps of programme implementations and has been translated into four languages: English, Spanish, Arabic and French.

Finalization of the regional workbooks: Currently, the Secretariat distributes regional sets of the Aflatoun workbooks in 4 languages. Today, partner organizations have contextualised the regional Aflatoun Curriculum 33 times, translating it into 20 languages.

"Children and Change 2009" published: this outlines the key findings of Aflatoun's impact assessment studies.

Two new Taskforces formed: Afla-Finance (financial access for Aflatoun Children) and Afla-innovations (new projects and product ideas)

Aflatoun Mid-Campaign meeting held under the auspices of First Lady Suzanne Mubarak and the Ministry of State for Family & population. The three-day meeting brought together over 170 participants from over 50 countries.

NFE curriculum: Material for non-formal Education was developed and is already being used to work with street children, juveniles in jail and other vulnerable children, as well as those in non-formal settings such as micro-finance institutions.

None of this would have been possible without the commitment and hard work of all members of the Aflatoun network: partners, donors, researchers and other stakeholder. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for you hard work and faith in Aflatoun's vision.

The Aflatoun Network Talks

“I visited three schools in the rural areas [of Pakistan]. All the children greeted us with Aflatoun hugs. They were savings and had plans to set u p a small shop. They even give loans to the community for setting up a small business. They also have small kitchen gardens from which they hope to sell the produce. It was wonderful to meet Aflatoun in the field"

Manizeh Bano, Executive Director Sahil, on visiting schools schools in which SSEWA Pak, also an implementing partner in Pakistan, runs the Aflatoun programme.

A final word of Thanks to new Aflatoun partner organizations!
